Aiko reveals previous Eurovision attempts

Czechia’s 2024 Eurovision representative, Aiko, has revealed she has tried to represent her country at Eurovision on multiple occasions in the past.

Aiko won ESCZ – Czechia’s national selection show for Eurovision – with her song Pedestal back in December, securing nearly double the amount of votes than Elly who came second.

However, this wasn’t her first attempt to reach Eurovision.

Speaking exclusively to The Euro Trip about the topic, Aiko said: “I’ve actually been entering for the past few years.

“I think this is my third try at this point.

“I just really like the community around it. I love that in Eurovision the artists are actually going in with their own music, which is very different to other contests.

“It’s something I really wanted to experience, and this is the year that it just worked out.”

On the occasions when Aiko submitted songs to Czech broadcaster Česká Televize to be included in ESCZ, her songs never made it to the televised selection show.

Aiko isn’t the first Eurovision act to reveal previous attempts to try to represent a country had been turned down by a national broadcaster.

In 2023, Lord Of The Lost guitarist Pi Stoffers told The Euro Trip that they had submitted a song to German broadcaster NDR in 2022, but it was rejected.

Although Eurovision artists tend to keep their staging ideas under wraps, Aiko teased a little bit of what viewers can expect to see from her show in Malmö in May.

“You can expect it to be very conceptual – there is a very interesting idea.”

Asked if she could reveal what colours would be involved, Aiko said: “Black, red and white.”
