‘I have never seen a live performance like that’: Luxembourg insider describes Eurovision selection

Jan Bors has described a “mind-blowing” moment from the audition stage of the first Luxembourg Song Contest.

Bors – Czechia’s Head of Delegation between 2016 and 2019 – was a member of the five person international jury that evaluated more than 100 acts who were in the running to represent Luxembourg on its return to Eurovision after a 31 year hiatus.

Speaking to The Euro Trip about the auditions, Bors said: “There was one act which blew my mind – I have never seen a live performance like that ever in my life.

“Maybe it sounds absolutely crazy, but what I saw I was like, ‘Please I hope this never ends, let this person sing forever’. I have never seen it in my life.”

Bors sat alongside two-time Cypriot Eurovision representative Alex Panayi, 2018 jury vote winner Cesár Sampson, 2024 Contest Producer Christer Björkman, and Israeli television producer Tali Eshkoli on the international jury in November last year.

“I have never seen a more professional approach than what RTL has,” Bors said.

“I don’t know their budget but what they want and what they do is a big, professional approach. They want to succeed.

“They created the panel of juries and made them watch 100 acts for three days – they simulated the pressure of Eurovision. It’s something huge.

“They believe in the project and they want the best outcome for their national selection show.”

The eight songs competing in Luxembourg’s national selection were released earlier this month, with some fans on social media commenting on the quality of songs.

“I would recommend people don’t judge anything from studio versions, because they are not really relevant for Eurovision,” Bors said.

“Studio versions can be lies – they can help or make things worse.”

The Luxembourg Song Contest will take place on January 27.
