BBC Eurovision team outline punchy aims for Olly Alexander

The BBC Eurovision team are aiming to win this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, and secure a number one single in the process.

Olly Alexander is representing the UK at the contest in Malmö later this year, and the team behind his selection have set out their ambitions.

Speaking exclusively to The Euro Trip, BBC Music’s Commissioning Executive, Will Wilkin, said: “Our ambition is to win and for the single to go to number one, and for it to be another watershed moment for Eurovision for the UK.

“You have to make peace with what the worst case scenario is to reach the best.

“Everyone that enters Eurovision is aware of what the worst case scenario can be, but I believe this will be another huge growth spike in terms of what Eurovision means.

“We can measure that in a million different ways if we want to, but really we’re going there to win it.

“And we are going there to win it with a single that is an incredibly commercially successful single.”

BBC Studios’ Eurovision Executive Producer, Lee Smithurst, joined Wilkin for an exclusive interview with The Euro Trip – available now on Acast, Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

Wilkin started to work alongside Lee Smithurst, BBC Studios’ Eurovision Executive Producer, in 2022 and was involved in the process to select Sam Ryder and Mae Muller.

During summer last year, he was instrumental in the selection of Olly Alexander to represent the UK in 2024.

Wilkin’s ambitions to both win Eurovision and secure a number one single in the UK are high. The UK hasn’t won Eurovision since 1997, nor has a UK entry gone to number one in the charts since 1996 when Gina G’s Ooh Ahh… Just A Little Bit topped the charts.

In 2022, Ryder came close to bagging a number one single with Space Man, but was pipped to the top spot by Harry Styles in a closely fought race.
